Hummus is a Mediterranean dish of chickpeas that are pureed with tahini, lemon, garlic, and salt that is normally served as a dip or an appetizer but it’s also fun to serve it as a meal by topping it with beef! This recipe is essentially a simple hummus topped with shawarma seasoned beef. The beef is made by cooking it in a pan along with onions and garlic before adding shawarma seasoning (link). This beef shawarma hummus is great as an appetizer, dip or meal and it’s perfect when served with warm pitas for scooping!
Beef Shawarma Hummus
Creamy hummus topped with shawarma seasoned beef!
ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (or lamb, or turkey)
- 1 onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 tablespoons shawarma seasoning (link)
- 2 (15 ounce) cans (~3 cups) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup tahini
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup lemon juice (~1 lemon)
- salt to taste
For the beef shawarma:

- Cook the ground beef in a large pan,breaking it apart as it cooks, about 10 minutes, before draining off any excess grease.
- Add the onion and cook until tender, about 5 minutes,
- Add the garlic and shawarma seasoning, mix well and cook for a minute.
- Puree everything in a food processor adding as much water as needed to get the desired consistency.

Option: Add 1 teaspoon soy sauce with the seasoning.
Option: Serve with diced cucumbers.
Option: Serve with diced tomatoes.
Option: Serve with sliced olives.
Option: Serve with pitas for scooping!
