Cajun Sloppy Joes

[heart_this] · Mar 3, 2025 · 2 Comments

Cajun Sloppy Joes

A quick and easy Cajun take on sloppy joes!

Sloppy joes, seasoned ground meat in sauce in sandwiches, are one of my favourites and this is a tasty Cajun style take on them! This recipe is pretty much a basic sloppy joe recipe with some cajun ingredients and flavours. Many Cajun style recipes include onions, celery and bell peppers as a base and these sandwiches include them along with a homemade cajun seasoning (link). The remaining ingredients are the normal sloppy one including: garlic, tomato paste, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, and vinegar. If you’re a fan of sloppy joes and you’re looking for a different take on them, this Cajun version is a tasty way to go!

A quick and easy Cajun style sloppy joes!

ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey, or chicken, or pork)
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup celery, diced
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cajun seasoning (link)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth (link) (or water)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (gluten-free for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 buns (gluten-free for gluten-free)
directions
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the beef and cook, breaking it up as it cooks, before draining off any excess grease.
  2. Add the onion, celery, and pepper and cook until tender, about 7-10 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic, cajun seasoning, and tomato paste and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
  4. Add the mixture of the broth, cornstarch, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper, bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches as desired and enjoy!
Option: Add a can of (drained and rinsed) red kidney beans in step 4!
Option: Add hot sauce to taste, at the end!
Option: Add your favourite sandwich fillings like cheese, pickles, mustard, onions, etc.!
