Cheeseburger Mac and Cheese

Cheeseburger Mac and Cheese

All of the flavours of cheeseburgers in a creamy mac and cheese!

Cheeseburgers and mac and cheese are both favourites of mine and they get even better when you combine them into one dish! This recipe takes all of the flavours of bacon cheeseburgers and places them in a creamy mac and cheese. A good mac and cheese recipe starts out with a good cheese sauce and this one is made with milk that’s thickened with a roux of butter and flour before, melting plenty of cheddar cheese and cream cheese into it! The cheeseburger flavours come from bacon, beef, onion, garlic, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard and seasonings. The macaroni is cooked in the same pan as the meat sauce by adding it along with enough broth to cook it in and simmering it until it’s tender. The cheese sauce is then mixed in creating magically cheesy bacon cheeseburger mac and cheese! Yum!

ingredients
    For the cheese sauce:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (gluten-free for gluten-free)
  • 2 cups milk (or broth)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • For the burger Mac:
  • 6 ounces bacon, sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning (link)
  • 2 1/2 cups beef broth (or water)
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 8 ounces pasta (such as macaroni) (gluten-free for gluten-free)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (gluten-free for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (gluten-free for gluten-free)
directions
    For the cheese sauce:
  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it’s frothy and the butter just starts to lightly brown.
  2. Sprinkle in the flour and let it simmer for a minute.
  3. Add the milk, stirring, bring to a simmer, and cook until the sauce thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the cheese and let it melt into the sauce, stirring.
  5. For the burger Mac:
  6. Cook the bacon in a large saucepan over medium heat, and set aside.
  7. Add the beef and cook, breaking it apart as it cooks, about 10 minutes, before draining off any excess grease.
  8. Add the onion and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
  9. Add the garlic, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, and steak seasoning, mix and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
  10. Add the broth, tomatoes, bacon, beef, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the pasta is tender, about 10 minutes, mixing every few minutes.
  11. Mix in the cheese sauce and enjoy!
Option: Add your favourite cheeseburger toppings, such as diced pickles, etc..
