Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches

Chicken cheese steak sandwiches with onions, peppers and plenty of melted provolone cheese!

Cheesesteak sandwiches are one of my favourites and this chicken version is almost as good! Cheesesteaks are make with thinly sliced beef that’s cooked along with onions (and optionally with peppers), before topping with cheese, usually whiz or provolone, and throwing it into a bun/roll/hoagie. This version starts with thinly sliced chicken that’s seasoned with garlic powder, oregano, cayenne, salt, pepper, soy sauce and worcestershire sauce and everything else is the same as the original. These chicken cheesesteaks are super easy to make and just packed with flavour!

Chicken Cheesesteak Sandwiches

Prep Time: 10 minutes Marinate Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes Servings: 4

Chicken cheese steak sandwiches with onions, peppers and plenty of melted provolone cheese!

ingredients
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons oil (or mayonnaise)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce (optional) (gluten-free or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional) (gluten-free for gluten-free)
  • 4 slices provolone
  • 4 hoagies/buns/rolls, cut in half (optionally toasted) (gluten-free for gluten-free)
directions
  1. Marinate the chicken in the mixture of the oil, garlic powder, oregano, cayenne, salt, and pepper for 20 minutes to overnight.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the onion and pepper and cook until tender and lightly caramelized, about 5 minutes, before setting aside.
  3. Add the chicken and cook, about 5-8 minutes, before mixing in the soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Mix in the onions and pepper, place the cheese on top and let it melt, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Divide the chicken cheesesteak mixture between the buns and enjoy!
Option: Add 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced.
Option: Add (or replace the provolone with) whiz!
