Greek Style Spaghetti (Makaronia Me Kima)

A quick and easy Greek style spaghetti with a hint of cinnamon and spice!

I’m a big fan of spaghetti (a meal with a tomato meat sauce served over spaghetti noodles) and this is a tasty Greek style version! This is a super simple recipe with beef, onions, garlic, and tomatoes seasoned with oregano and some warm spices: cinnamon, allspice, and cloves. All said and done, it takes about as much time to make the sauce as it takes to bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the spaghetti noodles! The recipe below is the base version and it’s easy to modify to your tastes. The leftovers taste even better the next day so I like to make a double batch for easy meals in the following days!

Greek Style Spaghetti (Makaronia Me Kima)

Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 25 minutes Servings: 4

A quick and easy Greek style spaghetti with a hint of cinnamon and spice!

ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can tomatoes, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper to taste
directions
  1. Cook the beef and onion in a large pan over medium-high heat, breaking it apart as it cooks, until cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Add the garlic and tomato paste and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
  3. Add the tomatoes, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, oregano, and oregano, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the bay leaves and enjoy with pasta, such as spaghetti!
Option: Add 1/2 cup carrots, diced.
Option: Add 1/2 cup celery, diced.
Option: Add 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes.
Option: Add 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce (gluten-free for gluten-free).
Option: Add 2 teaspoons soy sauce (gluten-free for gluten-free).
Option: Add 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar.
Option: Add 1 tablespoon brown sugar.
Option: Serve garnished with fresh chopped parsley, mint and/or basil!
Note: You can add some beef broth and simmer longer to bring out more flavour!
Note: The leftovers taste even better the next day! Make a double batch and store any leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge/refrigerator
