Cheese is one of my favourite foods and Tennessee onions, where onions are topped with melted cheese, is an amazing way to enjoy some! This recipe is as easy to make as placing onions in a baking pan, seasoning them with spices, sprinkling on cheese and baking until the onions are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbling. You can easily change up the seasoning and the cheeses and no matter how you make them, they are the perfect side dish for any meal, especially Thanksgiving!
Tennessee Onions
Seasoned sweet onion slices, baked until tented and smothered in plenty of melted cheese!
ingredients
- 2 pounds sweet onions, cut into 1/4-inch slices
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon (smoked) paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme
- 4 tablespoons butter, cut into 8 slices (optional)
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan cheese), grated
directions
- Place the onions in a large (greased) baking dish in layers, seasoning each layer with the mixture of the garlic powder, paprika, mustard powder, pepper, cayenne, oregano, and thyme, before sprinkling on the cheese and butter.
- Bake, covered, in a preheated 425F/220C, for 30 minutes, before removing the cover and baking for another 15-20 minutes. (The onions will be tender and the cheese will be melted and golden brown. when they are done.)
Option: Replace the mozzarella with gouda, swiss, gruyere, pepper jack, etc.
Option: Replace the spices with 1 tablespoon cajun seasoning (link) + 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder.
Option: Add 1 tablespoon brown sugar.
